Disc Injuries

Many peoples experiences back or neck pain throughout their lives. However, a disc injuries can be quite severe and debilitating. Especially if this is associated with arm or leg numbness and/or weakness. There is many type of disc problems. An often cause of disc injuries is a disc herniation or now called a disc protrusion. In this instance, the center substance of the disc called the nucleus pulposus will “herniate” or protrude using the outside ring called the annulus fibrosus. If the protrusion is substantial enough it could create pressure on the nerve creating arm paresthesia or radicular pain if the neck herniation is located in the neck or sciatica and/or lumbar radiculopathy if the herniation is at the lumbar spine.
Other disc problem coud include a disc bulge where the center of the disc is expanding but not focal a certain area. In most case of annular bulge, the nucleus pulposus will extend in more than 25% of the circumference of the disc and is not consider if focal extension.
Disc degeneration is also seen quite frequently and refer to an “arthritis of the disc” meaning the disc is becoming thinner and lose his water content and become dehydrated. They can be easily identified on MRI scan with a loss of T2 signal. They can be a source of back pain but also often associated with morning stiffness.
Finally, an annular tear is seen as a tear of the outside ring or annulus fibrosus. The tear can be significant or mild. Those cases are usually difficult to manage and there is still controversy thru the Chiropractic and medical community in regard to the significance they can play in patient of low back pain.
